UK CBD & Hemp Packaging: Compliance, Sizes & Branding

A practical guide to specifying compliant, retail-ready packaging for UK CBD, hemp and botanical brands — sizing for 3.5g mylar bags, Miron-style UV glass jars, and the labelling rules that keep your product on shelves.

Legal framing

What can you actually sell in the UK?

THC-containing cannabis is a Class B controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and is illegal to produce, supply or possess in the UK. What is legal — and what FMB prints for — is a defined set of adjacent categories:

  • CBD novel foods — oils, gummies, drinks and capsules on the FSA's public list of accepted applications, with less than 1mg of controlled cannabinoids per container.
  • CBD cosmetics and topicals — regulated under the UK Cosmetic Regulation, must be notified on the SCPN portal.
  • Industrial hemp / EU-approved cultivars — hemp tea, flower and pre-rolls where THC content stays under legal thresholds and the crop comes from an approved seed source.
  • Herbal, botanical and lifestyle — kratom-free herbal blends, mushroom (non-psilocybin), sleep and wellness formats.

Packaging that implies THC content, medical claims, or targets under-18s is a compliance risk regardless of what is inside — the printed artwork itself is part of the regulatory picture.

Sizing

Standard mylar bag sizes (3.5g, 7g, 14g, 28g)

Bag size is the first spec to lock in — it drives artwork proportions, shelf presentation and cost per unit. These are the industry-standard footprints FMB prints:

CapacityBag size (WxH)Typical use
1g / vape75 × 100mmSamples, cartridges, sachets
3.5g (⅛)100 × 150mmCBD flower, herbal blends
7g (¼)125 × 200mmLarger retail units
14g (½)150 × 230mmBulk hemp tea, botanicals
28g / 1oz180 × 260mmWholesale / trade

Direct-print mylar (artwork printed straight onto the bag) gives you edge-to-edge colour and the crispest finish. Label-on-bag is cheaper at low quantities and lets you A/B branding on the same stock.

Materials

Miron UV glass jars vs mylar bags

Both formats protect light- and oxygen-sensitive contents; the choice is usually price point, positioning and product weight.

  • Miron-style UV glass jars block visible light in the 450–720nm range while letting UV-A and infrared through — slowing terpene and cannabinoid degradation. Best for premium flower, tinctures and high-value botanicals.
  • Foil-lined mylar bags are lighter, cheaper to ship, and easier to brand edge-to-edge. Better for volume SKUs, subscription drops and low-margin lines.

For most CBD retail brands the answer is both: jars for the hero product, mylar for the sample and refill line.

Compliance

Labelling checklist for UK retail

  • Product name and legal category (food / cosmetic / hemp).
  • Net weight or volume in metric units.
  • CBD content declared in milligrams per container and per serving.
  • Full ingredient list in descending order by weight.
  • Allergen declarations emphasised (bold, italic or underlined).
  • Batch / lot number and best-before date.
  • Storage instructions and any usage warnings.
  • Business name and UK address of the responsible person or FBO.
  • FSA novel food application reference (for ingestibles).
  • Child-resistant closure compliant with BS EN ISO 8317 where required.
  • Tamper-evident seal — heat-shrink, induction seal or tear-strip.

Branding

Making compliant packaging still look premium

Compliance and design are not opposed. The strongest UK CBD brands treat legal copy as part of the layout — building around the mandatory panel rather than bolting it on afterwards.

  • Set the compliance panel first (mg, batch, FSA ref, address), then design the hero face around it.
  • Use spot UV, foil or emboss on the logo mark — not on the claims. It keeps the finish premium without dressing up regulated copy.
  • Match your jar and bag artwork on the same colour system so the product line reads as a range.
  • Order labels and packaging together so the batch code, best- before and QR link stay consistent across formats.

FAQ

Common questions

Is CBD legal to sell in the UK?

Yes, CBD products are legal in the UK provided they contain less than 1mg of controlled cannabinoids per container (THC, CBN) and the CBD is derived from an approved hemp source. Ingestible CBD (oils, gummies, drinks) must appear on the FSA's public list of Novel Food applications to be sold legally in England and Wales.

Is THC or 'weed' packaging legal to print in the UK?

Cannabis (THC) remains a Class B controlled drug in the UK. FMB prints packaging for legal CBD, hemp, herbal and lifestyle brands only. We do not knowingly produce packaging intended for the sale or supply of controlled substances.

What size mylar bag do I need for 3.5g?

The industry-standard 3.5g mylar bag is 100mm × 150mm (roughly 4" × 6"). Larger 7g bags step up to 125mm × 200mm and 14g/28g bags to 150mm × 230mm. FMB direct-print bags are available in all four sizes with matte or gloss finish.

What packaging is required for CBD flower or hemp buds?

CBD flower sold in the UK must be child-resistant, opaque or UV-blocking, and clearly labelled with the CBD content, batch number, source (hemp, EU-approved cultivar), and a 'not for human consumption' or 'novelty' disclaimer where appropriate. Miron-style UV glass jars and foil-lined mylar bags are the most common formats.

Do I need child-resistant packaging for CBD?

Any CBD product classed as a novel food (oils, edibles, capsules) must meet child-resistant closure standards under BS EN ISO 8317. Topicals and cosmetics have lighter requirements but should still carry tamper-evident seals.

What labelling is required on UK CBD packaging?

Product name, net weight or volume, CBD content in mg, full ingredient list, batch/lot number, best-before date, storage instructions, allergen declarations, business name and UK address, and a novel food FSA reference where applicable.
